Sixty years ago I sat in the Granada Cinema, Dovecot, Liverpool watching the film, “The Ghost And Mrs Muir,” I was yet to leave school and go to sea but that was my ambition and it lived with me constantly; I don’t remember if I enjoyed the movie but I believe I must have because, if you’ve seen the film, you will remember it was about the ghost of a sea captain and a widow Mrs Muir but more importantly it was about the sea.
This afternoon I watched the film again on satellite TV and this time I know I enjoyed it.
Mrs Muir was a widow who rented a cottage that had belonged to the captain, whom she was told had committed suicide and now haunted the place; eventually he appeared to her, she could see him but no one else could, and though she chided him, because of his salty language, she soon accepted him for who he was and it became obvious the old sea dog was becoming more than a little fond of Mrs Muir.
Anyway her livelihood was from the proceeds of shares she had in a gold mine that had been left to her by her late husband, then suddenly, a couple of months after renting the cottage, she learnt the gold mine had gone bust and she had no money; it would have been disastrous but for the captain who came up with the idea that he would dictate his life story and she would have it published under her name. Now we all know that if we sat down and dictated the life we led at sea to our wives and asked them to get it published as their own work they wouldn’t get a look in, the yarn would be pornographic and no one would believe it was written by a female and so it was when the captain was dictating to Mrs Muir and she said,” We can’t use that word” and he says, “Why it’s a very descriptive word, what word you use?” and he goes on to say, “Go ahead and use it,” and then purposely and slowly Mrs Muir hits the typewriter keys, tap, tap, tap, tap and immediately I knew the word.
A lot of things became clear to me and now I understand stuff that went over my head all those years ago; if you get the chance to watch the movie do so and I’m sure you’ll enjoy
