A supertanker constructed in Yokohama Shipyard (about 1975) was too large to be launched normally, so it was built in a drydock which was flooded when the ship was ready. It has a capacity of 280,000 tons deadweight.

Hi Reg, I've been absent for a few days, I will try reducing it this afternoon when I get home.
Cheers

Believe it or not on many of those very large Bulk-Carriers crew members are supplied with mopeds for travelling up to the bow, on tankers I believe they use small push-bikes; that was another expense not warranted on the five hatch jobs of our day!

Hi TonyDW.
I was told by a US Sailor expat that it was common at Yokohama shipyards in the 1970~1978 period for staff to use "mopeds"when working on large oil=tankers during construction. as some were "one quarter of a mile long".

I still can not imagine the amount of stress that would be encountered on that tanker in rough weather. Could you imagine watching it from the bridge I am sure you would be leaning to port while the bow was leaning to starboard.

Hi all .
Can you imagine doing lookout in big seas in that crows nest. Do they supply wet suits and scuba gear. You d spend a lot of the time underwater. One good thing about it you could have a fag and no one would see you.
