How Clever They Were!

Postby tonydw on Thu Jun 18, 2009 2:49 pm

Some very creative men sailed the ships, I remember sailing with one AB who made model sailing ships out of cleanly picked chicken skeletons, not that we got that many chickens. The keel of the model was the breast bone, I've forgotten how he made the masts but the completed model was a true work of art when all rigged and varnished. He also made the little man in the barrel and when you took the little man out of the barrel an elastcally attached match, with redhead still in place, would spring to attention, gave the ladies a surprise. :D ;)

Many seamen demonstrated a keen sense of humour with nicknames they gave to differet jobs around the ship, I recall the man on the washdown hose being referred to as "The Diver" because he was dragging the hose with someone tending, when Peggy was washing the dishes he was Pearl diving, some ships the bosun would be the "Sheriff" or even "The Wicked Fairy", mind you I wouldn't go round calling the wicked fairy to his face, a sense of humour was always an asset and always close to the surface, it kept the ship happy.

Hi All.
Ive heard of those chicken ships , but Ive never seen one. But there were some clever persons aboard, one one of my ships the rocket line had to be replaced. Somebody acquired a length of the line, which was white nylon type and started to make a bell rope for the ships bell. He was very ingenious with his knot tying. Soon everybody started to make them, where ever you looked there were guys engrossed in these things . swapping ideas showing us knots Ive never seen before. i Think we all went home with a few each. Even the deck officers were doing them. I think it only stopped when we run out of line.
Geoff. :D

I sailed with an AB on the Moss Huchisson boat Amarna who made models of the lads sitting around the table in the sailors mess, he made them out of paper - mache, painted them and put them them in one of them big bulbs that were used to light up the hatches while working cargo, "clusters", it was a really amazing piece of art.
