Acknowledgement to "Newspaper Arcuives" for this Article. Jesse James, notorious outlaw and train robber, died in St. Joseph, Missouri, today after he was shot in his own house. The killer Robert Ford--one of the members of James' gang--arrived at James' shanty in the south-eastern part of the city about ten days ago. Ford's brother, Charles, had been staying with Jesse James since November. “Robert arrived about ten days ago and the three have been making preparation for a raiding expedition on which to start to-night,” reported The Daily Advocate on April 4, 1882. "James and the two Fords being in the front room together, about nine o'clock this morning, the former took off his belt and laid his pistols on the bed, preparing to wash himself, when Robert Ford sprang up behind him and sent a bullet through his brain." NOTE: The 2007 Academy Award-nominated The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is an adaptation of Ron Hansen’s 1983 novel about the killing.
